Trip to Kinerma Village: ethnographic and culinary experience

  • Included meals: Tea break
Pick up at the train station or hotel in Petrozavodsk. Transfer to the historical Karelian village of Kinerma, located in 110 km from Petrozavodsk.

Upon arrival in the village, our local host will led the walking tour around the village. You will learn about the Karelians, indigenous inhabitants of this area, visit the historical peasant house of the early 20th century and the chapel of Our Lady of Smolensk. Dating back to the 18th century, it stands in a small sacred grove in the center of the village.

After the walking tour tea or coffee with traditional Karelian open-faced pastry, known as ‘kalitki”, will be served. Full lunch or dinner of traditional dishes, or vegetarian/vegan, may be available upon request.

On the subject of food, an optional kalitki cooking class may be arranged. It is quite an authentic experience when you learn how to make them with your own hands by rolling rye dough into sheets, forming, filling up with mashed potatoes or millet porridge, sealing and baking in the Russian stove. While the pastry is in the stove, the host will prepare tea in a traditional Russian charcoal Samovar. Enjoy freshly baked kalitki with tea before leaving back for Petrozavodsk.
