Spring birdwatching tour in Karelia

  • Included meals: Lunch
Early morning departure from Petrozavodsk to Olonets region where huge numbers of migrating birds forage and rest at the former farmlands before flying to the Arctic Sea coast for breeding.
Led by a professional naturalist with extensive knowledge about the local avifauna we will wander around the fields looking for birds. The most common species to be seen are the white-fronted goose (Anser albifrons, белолобый гусь) and bean goose (Anser fabalis, гуменник).
We may also spot the graylag goose (Anser anser, серый гусь), Canadian goose (Branta Canadensis, канадская казарка), barnacle goose (Branta leucopsis, белощёкая казарка) and lesser white-fronted goose (Anser arythropus, пискулька).
You can expect to see various raptors, including Montagu's harrier (Circuspygargus, луговой лунь), common kestrel (Falco tinnunculus, обыкновенная пустельга), white-tailed eagle (Haliaeetus albicilla, орлан-белохвост), etc.
We may encounter the common crane (Grus-grus, серый журавль), whooper swan (Cygnus Cygnus, лебедь-кликун), Eurasian Oystercatcher (Haematopus ostralegus, кулик-сорока), corncrake (crex-crex, коростель) and other species.
