Leningrad Oblast (region) is a communist era name of a big territory around St. Petersburg. The most famous places of interest of this region are the historical towns of Vyborg and Tikhvin, medieval fortress in Staraya Ladoga, Alexandro-Svirskiy Monastery and Mandrogi tourist village, both located on the Svir River. Besides of classical sightseeing, one can explore remains of fortifications located in the area of Soviet-Finnish battles of 1939 and do some ecological trips in Nizhnesvirsky Nature Reserve.
