Moscow metro is famous for its architecture. Many stations are beautifully decorated with statues, wall paintings and frescoes.
Moscow metro (Moscow underground or Moscow subway or Moscow tube) is the second largest metro system in the world after the one in Tokyo.
The first project of Moscow metro was worked out in 1901. The engineer P. Balinsky suggested that the districts of Moscow should be connected with an underground system of trains. The next projects appeared in 1925 and the first line was opened on May 15, 1935. The first station was “Sokolniki”.
Many British engineers worked on the construction of Moscow metro in the 1930s. Moscow metro has a topological tube map; this type of a map was designed by Harry Beck for London underground.
The construction of metro was stopped due to the beginning of the WW2. The metro stations were used as bomb-proof shelters. After the war the construction of a circle line was started. Many stations changed their names during the whole history of the system. In 1955 the metro system was named after Vladimir Lenin and still has this name
Today Moscow metro consists of 14 lines. On an ordinary working day, the metro takes up to 8 million passengers.
