Other interesting places in Novgorod region include Valdai National Park, town of Staraya Russa with Dostoevsky house-museum and Old-believers village of Lyakova. Solovetsky Monastery or just Solovki is the most famous tourist destination in Arkhangelsk region. Tours to Solovetsky usually include the town of Kem in Karelia because of the easy boat connection between Kem and Solovki. Among the other tourist attractions of the region are the city of Arkhangelsk, town of Kargopol with interesting old churches and Kenozero National Park with nature trails and ethnographic programs. One can take a boat trip or a cruise on the Severnaya Dvina River. One of the vessels involved is “Nickolai Gogol” steamer build in 1911 and still in the operation.
The Kola Peninsula attracts visitors from all over the world looking for a chance to see Aurora Borealis or the Northern Lights. Leningrad Oblast (region) is a communist era name of a big territory around St. Petersburg. The most famous places of interest of this region are the historical towns of Vyborg and Tikhvin, medieval fortress in Staraya Ladoga, Alexandro-Svirskiy Monastery and Mandrogi tourist village, both located on the Svir River. Besides of classical sightseeing, one can explore remains of fortifications located in the area of Soviet-Finnish battles of 1939 and do some ecological trips in Nizhnesvirsky Nature Reserve.
